Comparing 4″ Pipe Threaders
Steel Dragon Tools offers two models of pipe threading machines that thread, cut and ream up to 4-inch pipe, rod, and bolts. The Steel Dragon Tools 1224 and the Steel Dragon Tools 6790 pipe threading machines both thread, cut, and ream a wide range of black, galvanized, and plastic-coated pipe, as well as stainless steel, IMC, and heavy-wall conduit. Both machines are equipped with a foot switch, reversible motor, and come with die heads and dies, and an optional stand. The Steel Dragon Tools 6790 has a threading range of 1/2 in. to 4 in. The Steel Dragon Tools 1224 has a threading range of 1/4 in. to 4 in.
There are four major difference between the 1224 and the 6790:
1: The Steel Dragon Tools 1224 is compatible with universal RIDGID® brand dies, die heads, and jaw inserts. RIDGID® or Steel Dragon Tools 711 and 714 die heads are interchangeable between the Steel Dragon Tools 1224 and the RIDGID® 1224 pipe threading machines. All universal dies will fit both die heads and machines. The Steel Dragon Tools 1224 comes with a Steel Dragon Tools 711 and Steel Dragon Tools 714 die head. The Steel Dragon Tools 6790 pipe threading machine also includes two die heads but the dies and die heads for the 6790 will only fit other compatible Steel Dragon Tools pipe threaders.
2: The Steel Dragon Tools 1224 pipe threading machine is adjustable to thread both NPT (National Pipe Thread Tape) and NPSM (National Pipe Straight Mechanical) threads. The 6790 only threads NPT. The ability of the 1224 to thread both NPT and NPSM makes it an easy choice for electrical contractors who may have to do both.
3: The Steel Dragon Tools 6790 pipe threading machine has a two-speed transmission and 750-watt induction motor. The Steel Dragon Tools 1224 has a three-speed transmission and a 1,500-watt motor. The 1224 will handle 4-inch pipe threading much easier than the 6790 due to a larger motor motor and more-powerful transmission.
4: Price. The Steel Dragon Tools 1224 is considerably more expensive than the Steel Dragon Tools 6790. Both machines, however, cost significantly less than other machines built but name-brand competitors.

Steel Dragon Tools 819 Nipple Chuck
The Steel Dragon Tools 819 is a nipple chuck adapter used to create pipe nipples on 1/2-inch to 2-inch pipe. The Steel Dragon Tools 819 can be used with both RIDGID® and Steel Dragon Tools pipe threading machines, including model numbers 300, both power drive and compact, as well as 535, 1882, and 1224.
The Steel Dragon Tools 819 package includes a nipple chuck wrench, adapter hanger for storage, standard insert and five adapters: 1/2 in., 3/4 in., 1 in., 1-1/4 in., and 1-1/2 in. The base itself serves as the 2-inch adapter.
To create a pipe nipple, install pipe into the threading machine and thread pipe as normal. Cut the pipe to the desired length. Install the Steel Dragon Tools 819 nipple adapter into the pipe threading machine and screw the threaded end of pipe into the adapter. Do not over-tighten the pipe into the nipple adapter. Hand tight will be sufficient. Once the pipe is secure in the adapter, thread it as normal.
It is important to make sure the initial thread is the correct dimensions. If the threads are over-sized or under-sized, the pipe may become lodged in the adapter. Removing a lodged pipe will require a pipe wrench and considerable force. Test the threads with a thread gauge or corresponding fitting to ensure the threads are dimensionally correct. A fitting should turn 1-1/2 to 2 turns on a properly threaded pipe.
Insert the plug end of the nipple chuck wrench into the holes in the adapter to release the tension spring inside the adapter. Unscrew the pipe from the adapter while relieving the tension. A pipe wrench may be required to unscrew the pipe from the adapter. The pipe can become lodged in the adapter if the threads are not dimensionally correct. The pipe will tighten by itself in the adapter during the threading process.

Steel Dragon Tools buys used RIDGID® pipe threading equipment ranging from handheld pipe threader die heads, like the 12-R, up to heavy-duty models like the 1224 and 161. Steel Dragon Tools will also buy the various RIDGID® stands, die heads, and associated products.

Replacing Dies In A Die Head
Replacing or installing new dies in the Steel Dragon Tools 811A Die Head is quick and easy. Lay the die head on a stable surface and move the handles to make the scroll inside the die head retract. The scroll holds the dies in place.
Once the scroll has retracted, slide the die into the die head. The scroll must be fully retracted to remove or install a die into the die slot. Each die is marked with a number and should slide into the corresponding die slot on the die head.
Push the die into the die slot up to the marked line on the top of the die. Once all four dies have been inserted, move the handle to re-engage the scroll, securing the dies in the die head. Some adjustment on each die may be needed if the scroll will not fully engage.
Wiggling the dies back and forth while moving the handle will usually remedy the problem. Once the dies are firmly in place, reinstall the die head onto the pipe threading machine.
Having multiple die heads with
different-sized dies can reduce work stoppage. Utilizing two die heads with different sets of dies will reduce the work load from switching outs dies when threading a variety of pipe sizes and materials. Simply remove the die head from the machine, install the second die head with a different die set, and continue threading pipe.

Choosing the right pipe threading machine can be difficult and often expensive.
