Steel Dragon Tools 1224 vs Steel Dragon Tools 6790
Choosing the right pipe threading machine can be difficult and often expensive. Steel Dragon Tools manufacturers a variety of professional-grade, high-quality pipe threading machines that won’t break the bank. Two of the most popular pipe threading machines offered by Steel Dragon Tools are 1224 and the 6790. Both models will thread, cut, and ream pipe and electrical conduit up to 4-inches in diameter. The 1224 will also thread bolts up to 2-inches in diameter. The 1224 and 6790 pipe threading machines can be used on black, galvanized, stainless steel, and plastic-coated pipe, as well as IMC, and heavy-wall conduit. Each machine comes equipped with a foot pedal, reversible motor, die heads, dies, and optional stand.
The Steel Dragon Tools 1224 will thread 1/4-inch to 4-inch pipe while the Steel Dragon Tools 6790 will thread 1/2-inch to 4-inch pipe.
The Steel Dragon Tools 1224 is compatible with universal RIDGID® brand dies, die heads, and jaw inserts. The 1224 comes with Steel Dragon Tools 711 and 714 die heads. These die heads are interchangeable between the Steel Dragon Tools 1224 Pipe Threader and the RIDGID® 1224 Pipe Threader. Compatible RIDGID® dies will fit the Steel Dragon Tools 711 and 714 die heads. Compatible Steel Dragon Tools dies will also fit in RIDGID® 711 and 714 Die heads. Since the Steel Dragon Tools 1224 will accept compatible dies, it can be used to thread a variety of different pipe material, including PVC.
The Steel Dragon Tools 6790 also comes with two die heads. One die head will thread 1/2-inch to 2-inch pipe, the other die head will thread 2-1/2-inch to 4-inch pipe. The die heads for the 6790 are not compatible with other machines.
Both machines come with three sets of alloy dies to thread 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch pipe, 1-inch to 2-inch pipe, and 2-1/2-inch to 4-inch pipe. Alloy and high-speed steel dies are available for the full line of Steel Dragon Tools die heads.
The Steel Dragon Tools 1224 pipe threading machine will thread NPT (National Pipe Thread Tape) and NPSM (National Pipe Straight Mechanical) threads, making it an ideal choice for electrical contractors. The Steel Dragon Tools 6790 is designed only for NPT threading.
While both machines can be used on similar pipe diameters, the Steel Dragon Tools 1224 has a much larger motor, which can easily handle large-diameter threading jobs. The Steel Dragon Tools 6790 features a quiet, 750-watt, induction motor with a two-speed transmission. The smaller motor on the 6790 is ideal for use indoor where noise may be a factor. The Steel Dragon Tools 1224 has a 1,500-watt motor with a three-speed transmission.
The Steel Dragon Tools 1224 is a more versatile machine and can be used to thread a variety of materials. The Steel Dragon Tools 6790 offers a lower price point but has it limited to use on black iron pipe and conduit.
